Match Report

Kingston Cobras opened 2016 with an impressive 11-3 win vs Summer Cup rivals Solihull Vikings, in a pre-season match up.

Cobras asserted themselves on the game quickly, with new signing Josh Stockton scoring on his first shift (0.59) with a slick wrap-a-round finish.

Following the first goal both sides traded chances, in a fairly open game but both netminders stood firm. Vikings looked to have a great chance to tie it up with a break away, however Jay Robinson took a ‘good’ penalty in the ensuing defensive battle to thwart Solihull’s best chance of the period.

Vikings ran into some penalty trouble, picking up a too many men minor, followed shortly after by a slashing penalty to give Cobras a short 5 on 3 advantage. Despite moving the puck well on the ensuing power play, Kingston failed to find any decent shooting lanes as Solihull effectively killed the penalty.

Just after the half way mark of the first period Captain Gowan Beddoes doubled Cobras lead with a neat solo effort (11.42). Both sides played out the remainder of a physical period without any further additions to the score.

Following a short break, the second period got underway with Solihull beginning to gain some momentum. Their efforts were rewarded as Vikings, Wassall finally beat Cobras netminder Hudson (25.06) to half Kingston’s lead. Vikings continued to pressure following the goal, before a slick breakaway by Medley, Hogarth and Armitage left Solihull’s defence exposed allowing Armitage to fire home (27.51) and restore Cobras two goal cushion. The wind was knocked from the Vikings sails and Cobras began to assert themselves on the game once again.

Despite a number of good scoring opportunities Vikings netminder Burke was equal to the task and kept the score at 3-1. It looked as though we would be heading into the second intermission with two goals in it; however Cobras would score three times in the closing two minutes, Gennery (37.54), Naylor (38.30) and Beddoes (39.28) giving Kingston a 6-1 lead after two.

Heading into the final stanza, Vikings replaced Burke in goal with Gleadell. Cobras would also shuffle their lines with Beddoes heading into defence and Armitage moving back to forward.

Kingston drew first blood in the final period with Armitage taking a speculative slap shot from his own zone that ended up in the back of Solihull’s net (41.45).

Solihull were rewarded for their persistence when Edis registered their second goal of the contest (46.17). Cobras once again responded quickly with Hogarth adding an 8th goal just over two minutes later (48.47). Stockton (51.53) and Gennery (52.03) further extended Cobras lead before Stockton completed his hattrick (55.39) and Kingston’s scoring at 11 assisted by Naylor, who picked up four helpers on the night.

A contentious hit from a Solihull player saw Kingston pick up three quick minor penalties as a fairly fought contest threatened to boil over in the closing minutes. Following the penalty assessments, proceedings remained serene and Solihull capitalised on a 4 on 3 penalty as Wassall registered his second goal of the game and Vikings third.
