Playoff stage of the tournament review:

Semi-Final vs Solihull Vikings

The second semi-final would see Kinston face group A runners-up Solihull Vikings for the second time over the weekend. Cobras won the earlier game 4-1 and would be looking for a repeat victory to take them through to the final to face Paisley who had beaten Blackbears 2-1 in the first semi-final.

The Cobras got off to the best possible start with Andy Ward opening the scoring with barely 40 seconds on the clock. Kristaps Pete doubled Cobras lead at 4.55 assisted by Harley and Daintith. Ant Rogan got the Vikings off the mark three minutes later to leave the score line 2-1 in favour of the Cobras at the end of the first period.

The second period saw the Harley-Winn-Pete line combine for goals two minutes apart, Harley adding the first (21.05) with Andy Winn adding the second (23.49) to extend the Cobras lead to three goals with the game poised at 4-1. Ben Woollaston tested Cobras’ nerves when he reduced the deficit back to two goals with a strike on 26.01. The two goal lead would prove to be enough for the Cobras who progressed to the final to face Paisley Blackhawks,

Cobras Stats

Kristaps Pete (1+2), Andy Ward (1+1), Chris Hogarth (0+1), Kristaps Pete (0+1)

Final vs Paisley Blackhawks

So onto the final and the Cobras were matched up with Paisley Blackhawks, the only side to beat Kingston over the weekend so far and the team that knocked them out in the semi-final the year before. Paisley would be without forward Graeme McCamley following a match penalty picked up in the semi-final versus Altrincham. The final would be played over three fifteen minute periods.

The first period started out with both teams sparring it out like the opening round of a heavyweight boxing match. Little action was seen at either end as both teams battled for the puck with numerous full icings of the puck taking place. Shots in the first period Kingston 6 – 5 Paisley.

The second period saw the game spring into life, Turnbull put Paisley ahead on the powerplay at 21.43 as Chris Shepherdson sat in the box for an elbowing call. Cobras needed to respond quickly and Captain Gary Embrie duly obliged 30 seconds later on 22.28 assisted by Matt Sewell. Cobras continued to take the game to Paisley and were rewarded when Blackhawks netminder Anderson spilled a dump in and Mike Roddy was on hand to put the Cobras in front 2-1 (25.25). Second period shots: Kingston 17 – 10 Paisley.

Into the third and Cobras were 15 minutes from winning the tournament for the second time. Tom Harley put the Cobras further in front four minutes into the final period assisted by Andy Winn and Kristaps Pete. The game continued back and forth as chances dried up for both teams. Cobras tightened up on defence and changed to a trap game as they looked to run the clock down. A late penalty on Paisley saw Kristaps Pete cap a fine weekend roofing a powerplay chance with three minutes to go to put the game beyond Paisley. Frustration kicked in for Paisley with Heggie and Wishart ejected in the closing minutes. Kingston Cobras were crowned the tournament champions beating the holders 4-1 in the final.

Cobras Stats

Kristaps Pete (1+1), Mike Roddy (1+0), Gary Embrie (1+0), Tom Harley (1+0), Matt Sewell (0+1), Andy Winn (0+1)

Day two of the Kingston Cobras tournament review, takes us up to the end of the group stages:

GAME 4 vs Dumfries Demons

Day two of the Kingston Tournament proved to be the Cobras downfall a year earlier. Dumfries Demons were the opposition for the first game of the day, which looked a potentially tricky fixture. Cobras started as they had done in the previous three games, outshooting their opponents 21-1 in the first period, however they only had two goals to show for it at the end of the period with Cobras holding onto a 2-0 lead.

A period win in the second would guarantee the Cobras a semi-final place and top of group B. The second period followed a similar pattern to the first with the Cobras again outshooting the Demons 28-6. Matt Sewell would be the only Cobra that managed to beat Mclaren in the Dumfries net, however it gave the Cobras the point they needed and a 3-0 victory.

Cobras Stats

Mike Forbes (2+0), Matt Sewell (1+0), Chris Hogarth (0+1), Kristaps Pete (0+1)

GAME 5 vs Paisley Blackhawks

With both Kingston and tournament favourites Paisley already through the last group game provided what many thought would be a potential dress rehearsal for the final. The first period was a close affair with the shot count 17-14 in Kingston’s favour. Cobras took the first period 2-1 with Harley and Liam Sewell efforts being reduced by Paisley’s Finnie. Midway through the period Cobras’ Liam Sewell took a 5+game for slashing leaving the bench a player short.

The second period saw Paisley come out and score 50 seconds into the period to tie the score at 2-2. Six minutes later McCamley added his second of the game for Paisley and edge the current holders in front 3-2. The score would remain that way at the end of the second with Chris Hogarth becoming the second player ejected with a minute remaining for clipping.

Cobras Stats

Liam Sewell (1+0), Tom Hartley (1+0)

The following is a review of the Cobras progress in their recent tournament:

GAME 1 vs Grimsby Lightning
The first game of the weekend saw Kingston up against local rivals Grimsby for the fourth time this season. With the previous three games being fairly tight Cobras were keen to get off to a good start and they raced into a 5-1 lead with just over five minutes on the clock. Cobras added two more before the period was over to take a 7-1 lead into the break.

The second period proved frustrating for the Cobras, despite outshooting their opponents 17-7 they were held to a 1-1 tie, meaning despite an 8-2 victory the Cobras took 3 out of the 4 points available from the game.

Cobras Stats
Andy Ward (2+0), Kristaps Pete (2+0), Andy Daintith (1+0), Mike Forbes (1+0), Chris Hogarth (1+0), Liam Sewell (0+2), Gary Embrie (0+2)

GAME 2 vs Northern Ireland Prowlers
Cobras looked to build on their good start to the tournament against newcomers Northern Ireland Prowlers, playing their first game in the tournament against the hosts. Once again Cobras came flying out of the blocks taking a 4-0 lead within the first five minutes. Cobras continued to bombard the Prowlers net adding a further four goals to take an 8-0 into the break.

Looking to avoid a repeat of game one the Cobras came out firing in the second period with Kristaps Pete claiming a hat trick of goals in less than three minutes. With victory all but sealed the Cobras took their foot off the gas a little in terms of shots, however still managed to take the second period 7-0 giving them a clear 15-0 win.

Cobras Stats
Kristaps Pete (6+0), Liam Sewell (2+3), Mike Forbes (1+4), Andy Ward (1+1), Chris Hogarth (1+1), Gary Embrie (1+1), Rob McKirdy (1+0), Andy Winn (0+5), Tom Hartley (0+1)

GAME 3 vs Solihull Vikings
Game 3 saw the Cobras face their Midlands rivals Solihull Vikings, who were looking to avenge the 10-2 defeat two weeks earlier. The game started at a tense pace as Cobras attacking attempts were nullified by the Vikings defence. However eight minutes into the first period Kristaps Pete broke the deadlock with a goal assisted by Tom Harley and Andy Winn. Cobras would add a further two goals before the end of the first to take a 3-0 lead before the half way mark.
The second period took a similar pattern to the first with the Cobras looking threatening but not taking advantage of their shot totals. Despite outshooting the Vikings 17-7 in the period the Cobras missed out on a period win bonus point after Ant Rogan scored shorthanded (30.40) to cancel out Liam Sewell’s goal for the Cobras. Final score 4-1.

Cobras Stats
Kristaps Pete (2+0), Liam Sewell (1+0), Mike Forbes (1+0), Andy Winn (0+1), Andy Winn (0+1).
